Interesting places to visit in the area

Image of New Forest ponies grazingThe New Forest

The New Forest is justly famous for its wonderful scenery and history. Local residents with 'commoner's rights' are entitled to turn animals, including ponies, cows, and pigs onto the Forest for grazing. The Forest is mainly managed by the Forestry Commission, who not only maintain the area but also work it for timber. It is a wonderful area for walking, cycling and horse riding. There are many lovely old pubs scattered around the area, and it really is a delightful place to visit.

  • Rhinefield Ornamental Drive and Arboretum is delightful at any time of the year, but especially so in late May and June when the rhododendrons are in flower.

  • Horse Drawn Wagon Rides in the Forest are available in Burley or Lyndhurst, for those who prefer a more leisurely form of transport.

  • The New Forest Show - this famous agricultural show is held in nearby Brockenhurst each year in late July.

  • Holiday Hill Reptiliary contains an comprehensive breeding collection of amphibians and reptiles, including the rare adder.

Houses and Gardens

  • Beaulieu Palace House, gardens and Abbey. Home of Lord Montagu.

  • Exbury Gardens near Beaulieu, containing the famous Rothschild collection of Azaleas, Rhododendrons, Magnolias and Camellias, set in 200 acres of natural woodland by the Beaulieu River.

  • Breamore House A typical Elizabethan manor house, situated near Fordingbridge to the north of the New Forest.

  • Compton Acres Gardens  Canford Cliffs near Poole. Comprising 7 separate, distinct and beautiful gardens, overlooking Poole Harbour.

Museums

  • Sammy Miller's Motor Cycle Museum in New Milton is the largest museum of its type in Europe, and houses many vintage motorcycles. It is housed within beautifully restored farm buildings in Bashley on the outskirts of the town. This is well worth a visit if you have any interest in motorcycling (and they do good lunches and teas as well!). There is another web site about Sammy Miller's Museum with some excellent photographs.

  • St Barbe Museum, Lymington is a new feature of the town, having opened in 1995, and it contains many interesting artefacts from the area.

  • New Forest Museum & Visitor Centre in Lyndhurst explains the New Forest, its history, traditions, characters and wildlife.

  • The National Motor Museum in Beaulieu, home to a fabulous collection of veteran cars and motorcycles.

  • Bucklers Hard Maritime Museum near Beaulieu contains many maritime curios, and is where many of the old ships of the line were built from New Forest timber.
